Google Webmaster tools is a great free service provided by Google and allows bog owners and webmasters to check the the indexing status of their sites.
For me it gave me a view of which sites google could see, and to also make sure that my Site Map was being picked up correctly.
Integrating Google Webmaster Tools into your WordPress Blog is easy through the use of the Google integration toolkit plugin.
After you register for the Google Webmaster Tools service and log in there is an option to add a new Website, enter the URL of the site and click on continue.
You will then be given a meta tag line of code, copy the long string in between the speech marks (shown after content=) and paste it into the Meta tag value box in the settings screen of the Google Integration Toolkit plugin.
Make sure that the Meta Tag button is highlighted and save the settings.
Choose the option to ‘varify this site’ on the Google Webmaster Toolkit main screen.
Don’t forget to:
- make sure that your robots.txt file is ok – you can use Google Webmaster Tools to create one for you.
- Use the XML-Sitemap plugin to create your sitemap.
