Using Twitter to Follow a Major News incident (Explosion in Oslo)

Twitter is a great tool for allowing people to share their news very quickly, and nothing highlights this better then when a major news incident takes place.

Today there was a massive explosion in a government building in Oslo, whilst the cause is still unknown there is significant damage to buildings and probable casualties. We pray for everyone involved in the incident for their safe keeping.

Traditionally the world would have to wait for news reporters to get to the scene to start sharing the news of the incident, but modern technology, e.g. Twitter running on camera phones, allows people on the scene to share their own experiences and pictures of the incident. As soon as the incident happened on-lookers started to tell and show the world of what they could see.

This kind of crowd sourced news offers an unprecedented view at real time events, and we could all follow the real experiences of real people just by using the Twitter Search Engine.

Typing:  near:Oslo within:15mi into the Twitter Search box displays the Tweets that were posted with a 15 mile radius of Oslo, and the Twitter keeps refreshing the search results so that you are always seeing the latest updates.

We can see the news through the eyes of witnesses rather then the condensed summary by the news agencies.

How to Access FaceBook on a Java based feature phone

Facebook works very well and has a natural fit on Mobile Phones, and Facebook Apps are very popular on Smartphones.
Traditionally non-smart feature phones haven’t been able to provide Facebook access except through basic web browsers, however there is now a Java App which provides improved Facebook access more akin to the smart phone experience.
The App is currently being provided by 3UK to it’s customers and provides the ability to access updates and news feeds, synchronisation of contacts and to upload your photos.
Whilst SmartPhones are becoming more popular there are still a lot of traditional feature phone users out there and often they are overlooked.

How to Use Advanced Twitter Search Operators

Twitter can be an incredible information tool, it’s just that sometimes the sheer amount of information can be overwhelming, and it can be difficult to find the specific information that you are looking for. Fortunately Twitter  includes some powerful search tools.

The easiest way to performed advanced searches is through the Twitter Advanced Search Page which provides an easy to use interface but for true customisation Twitter provides a number of operators that you can input directly into a Twitter search box.

The operators in full can be found on this page but here are some useful examples.

I’m looking to connect with people in or around the English Coastal Town of Bridlington, so that I can find out about local events and news. I could just search for mentions of the town in the normal Twitter search box but it would be better to see who’s actually tweeting from there.

I can use the near: and Within: operators to see who’s been tweeting from around the town and surrounding areas, e.g. to see who’s been tweeting from within a 10 mile radius of Bridlington I can enter the following search parameter:

near:bridlington,uk within:10mi which returns a list of tweets from Users in Bridlington. Brilliant.

or perhaps you run a  website and and want to increase your sites Twitter Following by following Targeted Twitter users, for example UK based tweeters who play GTA (Grand Theft Auto) you could search for something like:

playing GTA near:Leeds within:300mi which searches for tweets containing both the words “playing”  and “GTA”,  that are made within 300 miles of Leeds, you could then connect with these users through twitter.

You could also then increase your Twitter following by using this method or feed the search string to an Automated Twitter Following Tool

Quick Twitter Followers Update (15/07/11)

In this post I discussed how I was testing TweetAttacks on Twitter Accounts that I created to see how quickly you could build up a large relatively targeted Twitter Audience.

Each time I make a post on iphone-experience.com I re-tweet on these other accounts to increase the number of people who are aware of my articles.

I have 4 accounts currently being increased by TweetAttacks, and I currently have a combined following of  715 twitter users, and increase of 315 over last weeks total.

How to Pickle Samphire

Samphire is an Edible Coastal plant that is rich in Vitamin C.

Samphire has a very short season, is generally available between July and August and is best eaten before it flowers. It can be eaten as part of a salad but also tastes great when pickled. Pickling also provides a method for long life storage.
There are several ways of pickling Samphire buy here’s the simple process that I followed:

1. Wash a pickling jar in hot soapy water and rinse well.

2. Sterilise the pickling jar by placing it in a pan of boiling water for 10 mins.

3. Carefully Wash the samphire and cut it into 2 inch sections if required.

4. Blanch the Samphire in boiling water for 1 min.

5. Rinse the Samphire under cold water.

6. Place the samphire into the picking jar.

7. Cover the samphire in pickling vinegar, you can mix your own but you can use pre-made pickling vinegar.

8. Stick a note of the date on the jar.

9. Leave the jar in a dark cool place for 3 months to pickle.

How to quickly increase your number of Twitter Followers

Twitter is a popular social network which can be used to reach a large number of people very quickly.
I’ve previously discussed how to increase the number of twitter followers but it is possible to automate the process.
This process is a little blackhat and can get your twitter account banned so it might be better to create new accounts for this process.
I’ve been testing a product called TweetAttacks which allows you to automatically follow the followers of a twitter account.

Tweetattacks works by simulating human interaction, and it allows you to set variables like the amount of time between follows so that it looks like a real human to twitter. I suggest that you set a max number of 200 follows per day and a time of between 10 and 20 seconds between follows.

The free version of Tweetattacks allows you to configure 5 Twitter accounts, and here’s why this is useful.
It’s very time consuming to get a single Twitter Account to 5000 followers but with Tweet Attacks you can easily get 5 account to 1000 users, so if all 5 accounts re-tweet a tweet from your main account it still gets seen by 5000 users. It is key that your new accounts have a similar theme to your main account, and there is content on those accounts, even if only re-tweets to make them worth following.

I’m current 1 week into this process, and I’ve picked up a total of 400 new followers I’ll feed back here on future progress.

The use of Telehealth with Heart Failure Patients

Here are some basic facts about Heart Failure in the UK.

There are currently 1 million patients affected by heart failure in the uk. There are 450k admissions of heart failure sufferers  into hospital each year, with 65k of these patients in a first diagnostic position. The average (Median) age of admitted patients is 79 years old and there is a high rate of recurrence in this cohort of patients.

The use of Telehealth with Heart Failure Patients

There are some significant reasons why the use of telecare in the care of Heart Failure patients should increase:

  • The number of heart failure patients is increasing
  • There are fewer professionals to provide health care
  • More monitoring of patients may be required.
  • There is a need to Reduce costs to the NHS.
  • The environmental agenda to reduce travelling and reduce CO2 admissions
  • Telehealth generally leads to better (and automated) record keeping

Why can TeleHealth can work for the care of Heart Failure patients?:

  • Patients With chronic illness learn routines.
  • Most patients are keen to improve their health, leading to more responsibility for their own health
  • There is a need to invest in patients, they could be seen as part of the ‘workforce’

With Telehealth equipment evidence suggests that you can:

  • Reduce admission into Hospital
  • Reduce duration of a patients stay in hospital as it’s possible to Improve Discharge planning with telecare
  • Improve mortality rates
  • Improve the overall patient experience.
  • Reduce cost of care
  • Manage a patient’s health from their own home rather than from hospital,
  • Know the right time to send the right patient to hospital.
  • Provide patient reassurance.

There have been trials of telehealth equipment and these suggest that:

  • There was a deduction in mortality of absolute 16.4% or relative 36%
  • There was No reduction in hospitalisation rates but  a decrease in the length of stay
  • Only 3.3% of patients ask for equipment to be removed
  • Telehealth supports clinical input.
  • With Structured Telephone support
    • Mortality Improved by just .88%
    • All cause hospitalisation improved by just .77%
  • With Home telemonitoring systems
    • 34% improvement in mortality rates
    • 10% improvement all cause hospitalisation rates
  • 227k investment  led to 87k net saving

There is a need to use caution of some stats as “Health generally improves when focused on”.

The Use of Telehealth with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

How can Telehealth be used to aid those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?

The use of Telecare, Telemedicine & TeleHealth is becoming more of a target for NHS Health trusts, as the ability to treat a patient in their own home without a clinician leaving their base can bring both care and cost improvements.

At the moment NHS trusts are looking at the use of Telehealth equipment in order to help COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) sufferers but will it bring the benefits to justify the expense outlaid by health trusts.

COPD isn’t actually one disease but a Spectrum of different disorders that cause airflow obstruction, Treatment for which can be complex and the NICE guidelines for COPD patients cover 673 pages.

Statistics show that with the use of telecare there can be a 75% reduction in A&E attendance and  83% reduction in hospital admittance, but it’s also recognised that telehealth can only work in conjunction with a treatment plan which includes input from multi-disciplinary teams.

The problem with using telehealth with COPD sufferers is what do you measure? Measurable levels don’t change much during an episode, meaning that even a Face to Face meeting with a clinician can provide difficulty is measurement. Therefore the cost of expensive measuring equipment may prove to be wasted investment.

Perhaps the biggest advantage from current Teleheath technology is the ability to talk directly with patient to provide calming reassurance and support, both as support during Exacerbation and as an aid to depression.

The use of  future telehealth equipment to reduce attacks by predicting Exacerbation.

COPD  patients that have a productive cough (“the Morning Cough”) are more likely to have exacerbation, and the more frequent the cough the more likely the exacerbation. Currently paper based questionnaires are issued to COPD patients to capture key health information, the paper forms are starting to be  replaced by telemonitoring systems, but it’s telehealth systems that automate cough recording that could provide the biggest benefits.

The number of coughs experienced by the patient increase during COPD as the patient is heading towards exacerbation, recordings of patients throughout the day can be electronically processed to identify coughs therefore significantly speeding up analysis, this would allow prompt intervention to stop the exacerbation.
Electronic Monitoring is more accurate then patient self-monitoring as chronic coughing is generally under reported by patient.

Local Politicians Use Personal insults in Official Publications

Today a flyer from our local Labour Party was pushed through our door in regards to the forth coming local elections.

I’ve traditionally been a Labour supporter but I was very disappointed in the quality of the flyer. For any political party to get my vote they need to explain what they stand for & what they are going to do in the local area. Unfortunately the flyer didn’t really do either.

Instead rather then concentrating on local labour policies it concentrates on what the Conservatives have done wrong during their time in local office, leaving me none the wiser on what their own policies are – other that under 16s will be able to swim for free!!!
Just to add salt onto the wound the flyer ended with the following statement:

This is a personal attack on 2 politicians not involved in the the local elections, space which of should have been used to tell me why I should vote for labour was wasted with child like banter.Politics is a very serious issue and the only way to gain serious votes is by presenting your policies and backing them up with hard facts.
Flyers like these do nothing to restore the reputation of all politicians and political parties, and in a world where our confidence is already low in the political process, they have no place in modern politics.

The use of Social Networks to Spread Information

Late Last night in Scunthorpe there was a mysterious, loud and somewhat unnerving loud humming noise heard across the Town. It sounded not unlike a large roaring fire and lasted for over an hour.

Scunthorpe has a large Steelworks complex so naturally it became the natural focus of attention. Media Outlets can’t report on incidents straight away but what became apparent were the benefits of having access to Social Networks like Twitter.

Within minutes of the noise starting other local people starting posting about it on Twitter, and developments (eg the presence of emergency services & sirens) were reported on there as soon as they happened.

By simply setting up a search for the word ‘Scunthorpe’ on Twitter whenever a post was made about the town it became available in the constantly updating search window, this allowed the rapid sharing of information, especially when combined with the Re-Tweet Tool. Even on this relatively small scale event Twitter shows how efficient and effective it can be, and the benefits are scalable.

Twitter provides the facility for local people to report on local issues significantly quicker than traditional media and without bias, which is why when some regimes start to have uprising by the people one of the first things they do is try and block Internet use, as after information is out there on the Internet it’s in the public domain for ever.

Part 1 Using Twitter can be found here.

Part 2 Using Discussion forums can be found here.

Part 3 Face Book can be found here.

    Part 4 Article Directories.

Article Directories are websites that catalogue and host large numbers of articles on various topics. A good source of information for readers search on specific topics, the main Article Directories try and guarantee good quality in documents by setting various rules on submission and checking each article manually.

The top Article Directories are very popular and receive thousands of hits per day, and because Article Authors tend to link back to the directories they have a high Google Page Rank.

There are 2 potential ways to use Article Directories to increase the amount of traffic to your site, but both require you to write a high quality article on the same\similar topic to your site.

I can recommend these articles Directory Sites:

After you identify which sites you are going to submit articles too, check out the sites rules and policies carefully to make sure that your document stays within their guidelines, and write a unique article for each site, making sure to check your spelling and the sites minimum number of words per article.

The first way to increase traffic to your site is to put a link to your site in the articles, each site will have different rules about placing links but most will allow a link in an information box at the end of the article.

In the information box place a sentence about where to find more information about the subject and a link to your site. Readers will find your article within the directory and then follow the link back to your site.

The second way to increase traffic to your site is through improved Google Authority, if you link back to your site within the article using key words that you want to rank highly for, then you have a better chance of ranking higher for those key words in Google. For example if you ran a website on Dog Coats and you wanted to rank highly for the search term “Dog Coats” then use that term as a hyperlink to your site.

Make sure you submit a different article to each site and submit several articles to each site for your keywords and you should notice that you start ranking higher in Google.

It’s certainly a very powerful and user friendly facility and well deserving of its position as most popular Social Networking Site.

FaceBook offers a number of ways for you to promote your Blog or Website.

    1) Status Updates.
Simply tell your FaceBook Friends about your Blog updates. If you post a URL in your status update, Facebook will publish a hyperlink and a brief preview, including a thumbnail image, of the webpage in your Status. 2) Groups.
FaceBook lets you create Discussion Groups based on the topic of your choice, so you could create a group to match the subject of your Blog, and allow other Facebook users join in the discussion. How to reduce the Number of People you Follow on Twitter

If you have been following this technique of finding additional Twitter Followers or you manually started to follow a lot of Twitter Users then you might find that your timeline becomes busy and unmanageable.

You might also get to a position where Twitter won’t let you follow anybody else as your ratio of followers to followed Tweeters is too low.

One solution would be to unfollow the Twitter users that don’t follow you, although this would be a massive and time consuming job if done manually – fortunately there is a web based tool which can help you.

Check out http://manageflitter.com/ and log in with your Twitter username and password.

When the site loads it will look something like the screen shot below

Down the left hand side of the screen there are several options for ordering the Tweeters you follow on screen, and the results are shown down the middle of the screen. If you click on the Not Following Back option it will shw the Twitter users who you follow but don’t follow back, you can manually tick all the check boxes on the right side  of the users profile and then click on Deselect All, and you will unfollow all the users who’s box you ticked.

However whilst this works it is time consuming as ManageFlitter doesn’t have a select all button,  so here’s a quick trick to speed things up.

Make sure that you have selected the not Following Back Option, and open the Java Console in your Internet Browser (In FireFox its in the tools Menu)

When the Java Console opens type (or copy and paste) the following 2 line of code into the console

    $(“input[name='unfollow[]‘]”).attr({checked:true});

    $(“#buttonUnfollowAll”).trigger(‘click’)

This will automatically select all the users on screen and unfollow them. You can then move to the next page of users and do the same thing. Using this method you can unfollow a large number of users very quickly, like in the the example below.

A Cost Free Strategy for Increasing Traffic to your Blog – Part 2 Discussion Forums

This is the second part of my series of guides to help you increase traffic to your Blog.

Part 1 Using Twitter can be found here.

    Part 2 Using Discussion forums

Discussion Forums have been around on the Internet for a long time now, and provide users with a dedicated space on the Internet to discuss specific topics. There are many Forums on the Internet so finding\joining one which covers the same topic as your site shouldn’t be a problem. Try and join one with lots of active users and lots of new posts, as an active Forum will be more interesting for you to be a member of.

Well used and supported Discussion Forums give a sense of community well beyond that provided by Facebook, but this means that there is a high sense of pride from its other users. A golden rule for Forums is that you need to contribute positively to the discussions, don’t sign up and post links to your site and never go back as this won’t work, and you are likely to get your posts deleted.

If the forum covers a topic you are interested in then you will enjoy contributing to discussions, this will also increase the sense of authority that other Forum users will have for you, making them more likely to check out any other posts you have made as well as your Blog.

There are 3 main ways that Internet Discussion Forums might be used to increase the traffic to your Blog:

    1) Make sure your profile information on your Forum account contains a link to your site.

This is a quick win, and although it won’t generate high levels of traffic it’s a must do. If you contribute well to forums then other forum users may look at your account profile and click on the link to your blog.

    2) Put a link to your Blog in your Signature.

Most forums provide the ability to add a signature to your profile, and your signature is displayed underneath every post you make. You can use your signature to provide information about yourself including a link to your site, you will need to check with the forum rules about the use of signatures, as some forums won’t allow links to be placed in a signature, either at all or until you have made a certain number of posts.

The use of links within Signatures is very powerful because your direct link appears under every post you make, making it more likely that other forum users will click on the link and visit your site.

    3) Posting links to Blog articles within Posts.

If someone starts a Topic on a Forum or asks a question and you have already covered that topic in a blog post then post a link to the article in a reply to the post. Make sure you explain why you are providing a link and explain that the article you are linking to covers the same topic.

This shouldn’t be abused but will attract visitors with a genuine interest in your Blogs subject matter to your site.

A Cost Free Strategy for Increasing Traffic to your Blog – Part 1 Using Twitter

There are many strategies out there on the web which try and guide you to increase traffic to your Blog, but many of them involve purchasing tool or services to help you.

I thought I would publish a series of cost free options which could form a strategy for bringing in extra traffic.

    Part 1 Using Twitter

Twitter is a fantastic free Social Networking Tool for reaching new people, and can be used in a number of ways the reach new readers, and allows you to announce new blog posts to your followers.

Get into the habit of tweeting with a link everytime you write an article on your blog to let your followers know that the article is online. The more followers you have the more chance you have of increased traffic reaching your Blog.

Firstly (and perhaps most importantly) Twitter can be used to form genuine relationships with other Twitter users, as the relationships\friendships are formed  you will find yourself retweeting and being retweeted and therefore reaching new readers. Your number of followers may grow slowly, but each one will be a genuine contact and much more likely to visit any links you post.

Secondly you can ask a Tweeter with a large amount of followers to re-tweet one of your  Tweets, and if they find your tweet interesting, its relevant to them or the article is about them then they might retweet. They don’t have to, they are doing you a favour, but if they do Retweet then you might see a huge spike in Traffic. I noticed this recently when I launched iphone-experience.com and a couple of TV presenters re-tweeted the link.

You will notice that the traffic will quickly fade away again, and most of these visitors will never visit your site again but some will start following your tweets, or bookmark your site. Others will also retweet your message and your followers might start growing organically.

Finally you can try and grow the number of followers you have as quickly as possible and there is a strategy for this. Try and find a user of Twitter who has a large number of followers and tweets about similar topics as your site. Then start following their followers.

Their followers will see that you tweet and post about a topic that interests them and might start following you, a word of warning though, don’t try this from your personal Twitter account otherwise your twitter time line will become too busy and unmanageable, instead set up a twitter account just for announcements about your site. More information about the Follow Followers Stragety can be found here.
