Twitters’s biggest problem is that it gives people the ability for them to reach many people very quickly, as the number of followers they have increases the more people hear their message, it gives them a voice to the world.
As a case in point, lets have a look at the former Big Brother contestant Kenneth Tong who this morning started trending in Twitter. Looking at his profile in Twitter identifies the problem.
Kenneth proudly endorses managed anorexia!
Other quotes from his Twitter Time line include:
- “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.”
- “I wholeheartedly hope I put you off your Dinner. Look at yourself. You are a disgrace. That’s why the Guy you like doesn’t notice you.”
- “I’m cruel to be kind. Fat people aren’t taken seriously. Skinny people will always be fashionable…” etc
The dictionary definition of Anorexia is: A psychophysiological disorder usually occurring in teenage women, characterized by fear of becoming obese, a distorted self-image, a persistent aversion to food, and severe weight loss and often marked by hyperactivity, self-induced vomiting, amenorrhea, and other physiological changes.
About 1 in every 250 girls suffers from some form of anorexia (different severity levels), and about 20% to 30% of these girls will ultimately die either from the disease or from a complication (eg heart problems) of the disease. In this media led age the has never been so much pressure for people to match a certain pre-defined image at what ever cost to their health, and Kenneth Tong’s message doesn’t help, and Twitter has helped him reach many people.
Currently over 17,000 people follow Kenneth on Twitter and today a few celebrity’s have used Twitter to criticise him, all have which has led to more publicity and more people seeing Kenneth’s dangerous message.
